IKEA is finally in Manila, Philippines
Just last month, IKEA Southeast Asia uploaded a job post on LinkedIn looking for a design manager in Manila. But as of today, the job post isn’t available anymore (looks like IKEA found their guy). He or she will also “work close together with the design team and play a crucial role in preparing, planning and executing of our first IKEA store in the Philippines.
The Swedish furniture company has chosen Manila as the location of its first store in the Southeast Asian country, it has been confirmed.
It will be built in SM’s Mall of Asia (MOA) complex, home to one of the world’s largest shopping destinations operated by SM Prime Holdings, and scheduled to open in 2020.
The company already made a long-term lease agreement with the SM Group of Companies. According to Philippine STAR, after the two parties finalized the agreement, there will be two stores to open in Metro Manila soon: the first IKEA store will be at SM Mall of Asia, between the Arena and the SMX Convention Center. This spot is an open parking lot so constructions might begin soon.
Meanwhile, the second store will be at SM Fairview to serve consumers in Quezon City and those coming from the North. The project is still in development as the Swedish furniture giant is still looking for designers.
The global giant’s foray into the Philippines is expected to create jobs and pose a challenge to local businesses, even as demand for furniture products in the country is projected to rise over the next few years.
IKEA’s do-it-yourself concept with furniture has been a worldwide phenomenon, with equally pleasant designs that fit most modern homes. It is also known for its modern styles and eco-friendly simplicity. Not only that, people also enjoy the meatballs, hot dogs and other delicacies that you can purchase from the store. So while we’re waiting, we’ll keep ourselves busy by looking for home inspos on Pinterest and filling our shopping lists.
Year 2020, please come sooner! We can’t wait to see IKEA Philippines!
